  • Quick Info

    Route difficulty: easy

    Length of route: 9,5km

This short cycling route begins in the centre of Cavtat, where it heads uphill along the winding road towards Zvekovica. Stop by the Church of St. George, and then turn right at the crossing and continue along the main road (mind the heavy traffic!). Turn right at the next crossing, and after a pleasant ride, you will reach Pendovo selo, which will reward you with a beautiful view of the slopes of Gornja Banda, Dubrovnik and the surrounding islands in the distance. Along most of this route, you will see dry stone walls. In the centre of Pendovo selo, turn right at the crossing towards the village of Diklići, where you can pay a visit to Mithra. Continue to the crossing, where you will turn right towards the chapel of St. Mary. Ride to the following crossing, where you will turn left. This point offers wonderful panoramas of the villages of Konavle, rare plants and interesting stone crosses, while the bell tower of the church in Čilipi rises in the distance. At the next crossing, turn left towards Čilipi. Soon, you will merge onto an asphalt road, at which crossing you will turn right. Turn left at the crossing in the village of Župani and continue to ride through the cypress forest until you reach the crossing with the main road towards Čilipi. Turn right here and ride carefully to the crossing, where you will turn left onto Bistroće Street and ride to the centre of Čilipi. After 9,5 km from the starting point in Cavtat, you will find yourself on the main square in Čilipi, with its monument to Tomislav, the first Croatian king, and the Church of St. Nicholas. To return to Cavtat, ride the same route you took to Čilipi.

More details

  • As soon as you finish your first climb, you will be rewarded with your first point of interest! The 15th century Church of St. George features a carved inscription, which confirms that this sacred place has been used continuously since ancient times. Beside the church, there are also a few mediaeval graves with standing tombstones that are well worth a look.
  • In the village of Diklići, visit the temple of the ancient god Mithra, who was worshipped in the region from the 2nd to the 4th century. A carving depicts Mithra facing east as he kills a bull.
  • Part of the route is lined with dry stone walls made by hand without the use of mortar.
  • Along the way, you’ll come across a series of stone crosses that pilgrims once visited during the traditional blessing of the fields, the oldest of which date from 1762.
  • In Čilipi, peek into the Church of St. Nicholas, which was built in 1853 in place of an older, 15th century church. On Sundays at 11:15 AM, you can enjoy a folklore presentation of Konavle’s traditions and dances (from April to October) or visit the Konavle Regional Museum.
